The Importance Of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde's masterpiece

The Importance of Being Earnest is the classically trivial Comedy for Serious People. Still having a startling social relevance, it is a farcical commentary in which the protagonists prefer live as fictitious personae to escape their burdensome social obligations. Playing upon the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play’s major themes are the contempt with which the characters treat institutions of class, marriage and material wealth, as well as its savage satire of the British Upper Classes.
